Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics was found in December 1999. It is one of the largest academic faculties in Kunming University of Science and Technology. The faculty was originally established by combination of two departments, namely Department of Construction Engineering and Mechanics in Kunming University of Science and Technology and Department of Construction Engineering in the Technical College of Yunnan Province. All the time, aim of the faculty is developing the interdisciplinary graduates with the ability of innovation and practice. After developing for more than 30 years, the education system contents various degree level including bachelor, master, PhD and postdoctoral.

There are 6 departments in the faculty including Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Department of Municipal Engineering, Department of Construction Management, Institute of Earthquake and Institute of Design. The researching and teaching group contains181 staff including 31 professors and 75 associate professors, while 61 of them have PhD degree. Now the number of supervisor for PhD and master are 31 and 90 respectively. Furthermore, our group has some distinguish members such as the expert with outstanding contribution for Yunnan Province, the youth leader for academic in Yunnan Province.

The faculty has more than 2300 undergraduates and 400 graduates. There are 7 majors granting bachelor degree including civil engineering, engineering mechanics, engineering of water supply and drainage, engineering of construction environment and energy application, engineering management, engineering assessment and engineering of urban underground space. The teachers and staffs mainly graduated from Kunming University of Science and Technology, Tingyi University, Chongqing University, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Zhejiang University and other prestigious universities. Some teachers also have relevant industrial experiences in civil engineering design, construction and consulting. The academic background and age composition of the faculty is currently rational.

Academic research is the most significant in the faculty. There is a postdoctoral research center settled in Mechanics Program, and a first-level doctor discipline of mechanics including 6 second-level disciplines, namely engineering mechanics, mechanics of solid, mechanics of fluid, general mechanics, mechanics of hazard preventing anddynamical system with calculation. There are 2 first-level master disciplines of mechanics and civil engineering, including 17 second-level disciplines. There is a comprehensive laboratory building for different kinds of experiments of civil engineering. And there is a center for experiments of engineering mechanics too. In addition, there is an earthquake simulation shaking table for experiments of simulation of earthquake.

The faculty focuses on academic research recently. The number of approval funding by National Natural Science Foundation of China is more than 10 each year, when the corresponding number for funding from Yunnan province and other units is more than 20. We have 3 first-level provincial awards, 2 second-level provincial awards, and 3 third-level provincial awards. The number of publications in EI and SCI has beyond 200, including 8 academic monographs. The adult and continuing education is also the important duty in the faculty. We have two engineer train centers for structural engineer and civil engineer. The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics has brought up lots of professional and qualified people, whose achievement are irreplaceable.
